    About the Author :

JOAN URBAN purchased her first Basset Hound in 1959 and bred her first Basset litter in 1963. Over the next 40 years, Joan limited her breeding program to less than one litter a year, and still produced a champion or two from each litter. In 1989 professional handler Bryan Martin handled Joan's homebred, Ch. Fort Merrill Lipz Stick, to the position of top winning Basset Hound of the year. "Stix" broke the all-time record for having won more Specialty Best in Show awards than any other female in the history of the breed. Stix retired with a record of 22 Specialty Bests in Show, 3 All Breed Bests in Show and 93 Hound Group placements, including 31 Group One placements.

In 1969, Joan was licensed by the AKC to judge Bassets at the championship level, and in 1971 judged Sweepstakes Classes at the Basset Hound Club of America. Currently Joan judges all of the Hound breeds, the Hound Group and several of the Working and Herding breeds.
